5 Elements Your Statement of Purpose MUST Have

MANY people depend on scholarships to pursue their Masters and/or PhD. Scholarship organizations depend on statements of purpose to understand candidates and determine whether they meet the requisite requirements. Each organization has different rules and requirements but a statement of purpose is universal and has a basic structure. A statement of purpose (SOP) is also called a letter of intent or personal statement. This is an essay submitted to either a scholarship committee or university admissions department by a candidate expressing education interests, career goals, professional and academic contributions and a traceable career path. This statement is basically used to asses a candidate's suitability for either a scholarship or admission. Usually, there are limited number of positions in a certain course or scholarship and the SOP is used to eliminate applicants. This therefore means the SOP must be well written to increase chances of winning. This article seeks to explain what the SOP must have for one to increase chances. It explains at least five parts of the SOP that must not miss if one is serious with their application. 1. Motivation One must explain what motivates them to apply or seek to pursue a certain program, discipline or scholarship. There must be a driving force that propels one and the committe should know about it. 2. Program/Discipline A candidate must explain why s/he decided to pick a certain program or discipline. Pursuing a program at masters or PhD level is not a mandatory requirement. Usually, one does it out of free will. It is therefore in order to explain why a certain discipline is your preferred one and how you intend to use it to meet your career goals. 3. Qualification 4. Choice of University 5. Career Goals
